The lower salt river is the closest summer paddling destination for paddlers in the Phoenix area. The River has flowed year round in the past when there was ample water, but now the water only flows during the summer and not at the levels it used to due to the recent drought. Average summer levels used to be 1000+ cfs but now we are lucky to get 400 - 500 cfs.
Most people meet at either the Granite reef rec site or the Phon D Sutton rec site to set up shuttles. Granite reef is the farthest you can go down the river, Some people prefer to exit at Phon D Sutton because the last few miles after that are uneventfull and long. Decent for scenery but nothing else. The first put in is at Water Users rec site, this puts you in at the top of the river below Stewart Mountain Dam. For a short day you can set up a shuttle at the Blue point bridge which is the first RAP(river access point) after you leave water users rec site. This is a short section as most of the river is below the bridge. The next RAP is Tuber exit#4(this river is heavily populated with inner-tubers. There is a concessionaire by the name of Salt River Recreation that rents tubes and runs a bus shuttle) You can leave a car here as well for a shuttle if you wanted to get out here. You can see the signs on the river that point out the exit. The next RAP is Coon Bluff Rec. site, this is a picnic area along the river, the banks are steep and it can be difficult to get your boat out of the water. Just a little ways further is the Phon D Sutton Rec area, there are boulders in the water and this is a fun Play area when the water is flowing at decent levels. It is a short hike up to the parking lot(there are stairs) From here the river slows down and widens out. If you continue on it will take you down to the Granite reef rec site. This is as far as you can go.
